Technical - FAQ

What is 3G service in mobile networking?

3G is the third generation of tele standards and technology for mobile networking, superseding 2.5G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the IMT-2000.

3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include video calls and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Additional features also include HSDPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 3.6 Mbit/s

How 3G is different from existing services?

2G and its further upgardation till 2.75G networks (existing) were built mainly for voice data and slow transmission. Due to rapid changes in user expectation, they do not meet today's wireless needs. Evolution from 2G to 3G can be sub-divided into following phases:

  • 2G – Represents only the Cellular services.
  • 2G to 2.5G - cellular services combined with GPRS became 2.5G and provide data rates from 56 kbit/s up to 114 kbit/s . It can be used for services such as Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) access, Short Message Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and for Internet communication services such as email and World Wide Web access.
  • 2.5G to 2.75G -  GPRS networks evolved to EDGE networks with the introduction of 8PSK encoding and referred as the 2.75G. It provide high data rates.
  • 2.75G to 3G - From EDGE networks the introduction of UMTS networks and technology is called pure 3G.

What is HSDPA?

High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. MTNL HSDPA deployments would have down-link speeds of 3.6 Mbit/s.

What are speeds I can get through 3G services?

You will experience data speeds up to 2 Mbps with 3g. Using HSDPA services you can experience speed up to 3.6 Mbps.

If I don’t get the 3G services on my mobile, what should I check?

If your mobile set is not showing 3G after ensuring 3G enabled mobile handset, USIM and 3G coverage area, please set the network mode(band) in “dual mode” or “WCDMA or UMTS (as per handset)” this option is mostly available in Tools (setting) - phone – Network. Otherwise to change the spectrums please check the handset manual.

Will I continue to enjoy my existing 2G VAS services with 3G packages?

Yes

What are the APN (Access Point Name) setting for 3G data services?

3G postpaid       gprsmtnldel

3G prepaid       gprsppsdel

What is UMTS?

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

Can I download and upload videos on my mobile?

Yes, with 3G you can watch streaming videos and download videos on your mobile handset. You can also send user generated content i.e record video from your mobile and share them with your friends or upload on internet sites from your mobile.

What is the maximum file size which can be uploaded?

You can upload any file size. Large file size requires more time to upload.

Will I have to change my SIM to migrate to 3G?

No, you can access 3G services from your existing SIM. Now MTNL has converted all it’s subscribers at 3G platforms and hence bottleneck in getting 3G service may be your handset.

What will happen if I am out of 3G coverage area?

You will continue to access 2G/2.5G services in areas where 3G coverage is absent. Please ensure that your network setting is on dual mode.

Do I need to do any settings on my mobile handset for 3G?

YES. You will have to select 3G/UMTS Dual mode in your handset for network selection.

What is video streaming?

Video Streaming is a sequence of "moving images" that are sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer as they arrive. It allows user to view video contents while downloading is in progress. 3 G Technology provide the requisite data speed that such live streaming become possible.
